Topic outline

For this session we welcome back former Access MVP, George Hepworth, as our presenter. George will outline his recent journey using AI to create the structures for Access template files.

In a sense, the idea of a "template" is counter to what AI is all about. In an Open Template Scaffold (OTS), the AI agent is free to innovate as it pulls the various database components and merges then into a solution.

An OTS template defines its promised outcome and it gives you a series of predefined validation checks so that you can say, "yes, this is what I wanted." However, an OTS template is almost guaranteed not to follow the same route to completion twice in a row. The process and details vary from run to run, sometimes in insignificant ways, but more pronounced at other times. In each case, the end result is the same.

During the session, George will demonstrate the Stocktake Scan template, following the outcome-based approach. Originally this was designed for beginners e.g. those moving from Excel to Access and the language used was deliberately simplified. Now, he plans to develop the template, so it is more targeted at professional developers. Currently there is an emphasis on a structured approach to building with guidance using a MCP Server but professional developers may prefer a different approach.

The project is very much a 'work in progress' and by attending the session you will have the opportunity to influence its future path. As developers, your feedback on this will be very useful.

For more details, see the Open Template Scaffolds project on GitHub.

NOTE: This session is a progression from George's Access Pacific presentation on Thur 1 Oct. Whilst there will be some overlap, it is not essential to have viewed the earlier session beforehand.

Background

George Hepworth (AKA Grover Park George) is a 13x former Access MVP from 2007-2019 and is still very active in the Access community.

George Hepworth
George is the president of the Access Pacific User Group which holds monthly online meetings on the first Thursday of each month.
He is one of six contributing authors to the
Access Forever blog site and has his own web blog, Grover Park Consulting.

George's love affair with MS Access began in the early 90’s when he was tapped to create a tracking system for the continuing education courses he and his colleagues wrote and sold. He decided that database development was more interesting than the writing side and began the transition.

Over the next 25 years, George worked in a variety of environments as a database developer focusing on Access and later, SQL Server with Access. He has authored or co-authored several books on Access.

He is active on several Access forums as GPGeorge (or similar) and is a moderator at Microsoft Q&A forum and on Reddit.
